The LMT World Percussion Ensemble were very privileged to have three Samba musicians visiting from Rio de Janeiro to work with young percussionists. Gabriel Lopes, Mestre Maurao and JP are amongst the world's most revered Samba players and band leaders. They are delivering a series of performances and workshops across the UK and we were lucky to have had their presence here in Sandbach.
The workshop focused on extremely important Samba concepts such as listening, togetherness, finding the right style for each groove and also pulse. Throughout the two and a half hour session, we were playing for roughly two hours straight! Each person selected an instrument to play from a huge range and were given professional instruction in how to play. The young players were astounding and have gained a huge amount from the workshop.
The main groove we learned was a bossa-style bateria groove. Gabriel, Maurao and JP also led us through the most modern of Samba breaks and calls - ones they had used themselves only two weeks ago at the Rio Carnivale!
Meeting the men who deliver this musical style to the highest of levels was fantastic and it is moments like these, in our young people's musical lives, which will stick with them for a lifetime.
