| This month the Spotlight is on our Partner Ensemble Cre8 Music
Cre8 Music was formed in 2012 as part of the wider work of Cre8 Youth & Community Programme on the Moss Estate in Macclesfield. Through support from Youth Music and Love Music Trust, Cre8 Music provides free music-making activities for disadvantaged and NEET young people aged 8-18. These include free rock and pop instrumental lessons leading to exams, group practices and informal teaching with our music support workers.
Cre8 Music runs two drop-in activities after school every Wednesday and Friday, open to all children and young people living on the Moss Estate. This is usually attended by 20-25 young people, and combines music-making with a safe, supportive environment supervised by musical and youth work staff.
Cre8 Music runs a young music leaders programme, encouraging young adults to volunteer and share their musical skills with young people in exchange for free training and experience.
Cre8 Music also hosts 3 concert performances per year, showcasing the children and young people’s talents. The next of these is on Saturday 21st July at St Barnabas Church in Macclesfield. The LMT will host its annual Celebration Weekend in during the weekend of 22nd June and we'd love it if you could join us!
We are looking forward to hearing all of our groups and ensembles perform. There is an array of music performances over the weekend including; orchestras, choirs, big bands and many more! The weekend takes place on 22th - 24th June in the picturesque setting of Clonter Opera.
This will include six jam packed concerts featuring all of the LMT Ensembles and also some of our Partner Ensembles.
Why not make a day of it? There will be refreshments available and you are also welcome to bring your own picnic and sit in the garden

LMT Vocal Residential
The first LMT Vocal Residential took place on 4th - 6 May where 25 pupils and 3 vocal tutors spent an exciting weekend at Stanley Head outdoor pursuits centre from Friday 4 th May – Sunday 6 th May. The weekend was spent in fantastic accommodation set in the rolling Staffordshire countryside. The food was amazing and we spent half a day enjoying high ropes, climbing wall and archery activities. Whilst the sun shone down on us all weekend, we also learnt how to improvise, sing scat, beat-box, drum, rap and, of course, improve our vocal and choral skills. The chickens and ducks that roamed the fields really enjoyed our company and musicality! Our Saturday evening campfire was the perfect end to a perfect and most productive day!
A Sunday afternoon concert back at Sandbach School, featured various different groups, and the full choir and celebrated songs such as ‘Scoobeedoo’, ‘Sing Love’, a joyful South African gospel song, ‘These Days’, ‘Blue Mountain River’, ‘A Million Dreams’ from the Greatest Showman, Green day’s ‘Good Riddance’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis.
A true celebration of singing together – we look forward to the next LMT Vocal Residential
in 2019!

This month the Student Spotlight is on Matthew Brett from the LMT Percussion Ensemble
Tell us a little about your background as a Musician
I started playing drum kit when I was 10. My sisters were members of the Co-operative Youth Wind Band and I always went along to watch. When they needed a drummer I decided to join in and started having lessons with my teacher, Mark Concar. I kept practicing and eventually got distinction in my Grade 8 exam. Since then I have been lucky enough to earn places in the National Children's Orchestra, Hallé Youth Orchestra and later the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, of which I am now principal percussion. These orchestras have taken me to some of the greatest concert halls in the UK and abroad, including the Royal Albert Hall for an annual Prom. Before learning percussion, I was also learning piano, on which I now have Grade 8 distinction too. Throughout my career I have played with many LMT ensembles and currently play with the percussion ensemble!
How did you come to join the percussion ensemble?
My teacher, Mark, invited me along! I thought it would be really cool to play with other percussionists and I had no idea that so many percussionists could make such a great sound! All these years later and I'm still here!
What is your favourite part of playing for the percussion ensemble?
The percussion ensemble is great as it allows me to play chamber music, something I have never really done before. We get to play all kinds of instruments too and we are even supported in composition as the ensemble regularly performs compositions by the players! My highlights are definitely all of the master classes and workshops we have done with percussionists from across the world!
What have been the highlights of your musical career so far?
The main highlight of my career so far must be winning the Percussion Category of BBC Young Musician, where I could prepare a recital and perform in a great hall to a panel of judges! I've also loved joining the National Youth Orchestra as I have been able to visit some really great concert halls and we have even been abroad! I have also had other highlights, such as workshops and master classes with amazing musicians, such as when the percussion ensemble got to perform at the Southbank Centre alongside Anthony Kerr! I also loved going across to Kerkrade with the percussion ensemble, where we got to perform in the World Music Contest and we played one of my pieces!
Do you have any musical aspirations for the future?
I would love to go into music as a career, doing solo performances and playing with orchestras! Before all of this I hope to go to a Conservatoire and get my degree in music performance.
What school do you go to and what lessons do you enjoy?
I'm currently a year 12 pupil at Sandbach High School. I love all my subjects but particularly love music, where I get to study a variety of different works, perform and compose! As well as music I also study Maths and Biology. I go and practice whenever I get free time and all of my teachers and friends have been really supportive!
What do you enjoy doing when you're not playing? What are your other hobbies?
In all honesty I do so much music that it's sometimes impossible to find time for anything else! I do love to read in my spare time and I love travelling around, which goes well with music. Music is so enjoyable and I get to meet so many new people that I never see it as work, it's all fun!

Cheshire East Music Education Conference
On Wednesday 25th April, the second annual Cheshire East Music Education Conference was held at the Romero Conference Centre in Macclesfield. We were joined by delegates from across Cheshire East for a day of inspirational sessions on a variety of topics relating to music education.
Kicking off our day was keynote speaker Martin Fautley, Professor of Education at Birmingham City University. For the first session, delegates could choose between two workshops: one from Out of the Ark on developing lessons based on their primary singing resources; the other from percussionist Josh Savage giving an insight into looping stations and their application in the classroom. Following a coffee break, we were treated to a performance from Brass Phats from Sandbach School, who played a great set including a couple of Stevie Wonder hits!
While Out of the Ark delivered the second half of their workshop, Sarah Fisher from Drake Music led an inspiring session on her experience as a disabled musician in mainstream education, and demonstrated her innovative approach to music leadership. After a filling lunch, Teresa East from Curious Minds explained more about Arts Award, and rock band Empire from All Hallows School played a fantastic set to get us all dancing.
The final session of the day brought all delegates together to participate in a Modulo Meet. This was led by Anna Williams from Orchestras for All, and it was great fun for all of us to play together to round off a very successful conference.

Saxophone Day
We are pleased to announce that the Sandbach Saxophone Day will be running again this year and bookings are now being taken!
On Sunday 1st July, respected Saxophonist and award-winning Composer Andy Scott will be leading ensemble sessions and workshops. Andy will be joined on the day by RNCM Graduate Jamie Sharp.
The course is idea for saxophonists of Grade 3 standard tp to a professional level, all types of saxophone are welcome and whether you want to find out more about saxophone technique, ensemble skills, improvisation, or just enjoy a day of quality music-making, this is the course for you!
The day is run in conjunction with the Love Music Trust and will take place at the Maxwell Davies Music Centre, Sandbach School, CW11 3NS. The day will run from 10am - 5pm with registration at 9.30am.
The day is priced at £35 per person. Students aged 16 and under, and also all Love Music Trust ensemble members pay just £30.

Free String Workshops
For all budding string players, each month Clare Smith will be running a free workshop at Sir Williams Stanier from 3.45pm till 5.15pm

Monday July 9th
The workshop will take place in the Music Department. Participants will be met at reception at the main entrance.
The Strings Workshops are an opportunity for those learning Strings Instruments to play with others in an ensemble for the first time. Beginners are welcome (most players there have been playing less than two years) but some understanding of reading notation is necessary. The simplest parts only involve knowing how to read a few notes however and are all in the first finger pattern so easy to play. We usually have a warm up and introducing game without instruments to start where we might learn any interesting rhythms we need to know away from the page before we even look at a note or tune up. The point is to end the session having had fun making music well together so the repertoire is easy and achievable. Anyone who has been learning for a term would benefit from attending.

Orchestral Residential
This years LMT Orchestral Residential will again be held at the Conway Centre in Anglesey, from Friday 14th - Sunday 16th September 2017.
The residential is aimed at students of Grade 5+ standard and is open to all orchestral instrumentalists across the borough. This is a great opportunity for musicians who play in a range of ensembles yet may not have previously had the opportunity to take part in an orchestra
The cost of the whole weekend inclusive of travel, accommodation, meals, rehearsals and an outdoor activities is £75, this place has been subsided by the Love Music Trust
The course is open to students age 11 - 19 and in full time education.

The Love Music Trust is delighted to once again be working in partnership with Hallé Education to give the young musicians of Cheshire East the opportunity to 'Come and Play with the Hallé'!
This year's concert, entitled 'Strictly Hallé', features a wide range of dance music from the classical and modern orchestral repertoire.
The concert starts at 1:30pm on Tuesday 19th June.

| 'The Snowman' with live Orchestra 2018
We would like to invite your pupils to a unique and special event – a screening of the much loved film, The Snowman, accompanied by a live 26 piece professional orchestra. The Snowman Orchestra comprises hand-picked, first class musicians, many of whom are members of the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé and BBC Symphony Orchestras amongst others.
There will be a schools performance on Monday 17th December 2018 at 1:30pm. It will take place at Victoria Hall , Hanley and will last for 1 hour. Following on from the high demand for tickets for The Snowman live experience last year we will be offering places on a first come first served basis. We will confirm your request for tickets via email and hopefully we will be able to accommodate all requests.
This is a wonderful opportunity for your pupils to experience the thrill of live music underpinning an iconic film and the power of music close-up. The performance provides the perfect opportunity to fulfil one of the main aims of the music National Curriculum: "to appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live music from great composers and musicians".
The concert will open with a toe-tapping Christmas Medley followed by a fun introduction to the orchestra. All the instruments are presented in a fun and approachable way, offering the young audience members the valuable experience of seeing - and hearing - the instruments individually.
Following this there will be a world premiere of a brand new work created especially for us: A Donkey’s Tale. Set amidst the wild landscape of Connemara in the west of Ireland, it tells the heartwarming story of Dillon, an ordinary donkey with an extraordinary dream that takes him on a journey that will change his life. This stunning animated film with accompanying musical score looks set to become a firm favourite for all ages.
The Snowman film will then be projected onto the screen, accompanied by a local child soloist singing the timeless “Walking In The Air”.This is a very special opportunity; we do hope you will take advantage of this offer to let the children from your school enjoy a truly magical and unforgettable experience.

Singfest, Barney Bear & Betty Bear projects for 2018-19
We are delighted to bring you information about our 3 exciting projects for the academic year 2018-2019.
Following on from the success of Singfest this year we are offering KS2 Singfest '19 - Music through the Decades. Songs will include wartime favourites, rock and roll, Beatles, Queen, 80's classics, Robbie Williams, Take That and The Greatest Showman.
The children will come together for 2 massed rehearsals, as in previous years, to learn the original and exciting medleys. Massed rehearsals will take place in a local high school and there will be a massed celebration concert at Crewe Lyceum on 18th or 19th March 2019 at either 9:30, 12:00 or 2:30. We will confirm dates and times in the autumn term once schools have signed up. The project costs £125.

For EYFS we are once again offering Adventures with Barney Bear. Barney Bear takes the children on a trip to the seaside where they play on the beach, join a band, explore the sea and learn to rock and roll. The children are introduced to basic musicianship skills through songs, games and percussion instruments. The project includes 6 x 45 minute sessions, scheme of work, songbook, CD and the opportunity to perform to parents. The project costs £225 per class of 30 children.

For KS1 Betty Bear Goes to the Seaside. Join Betty on her travels to the coast where she will have lots of fun on the beach, explore rock pools, and make friends with the animals living in the sea.
